 Seven great teachers from the past...all in one book to inspire, challenge and guide you! These teachers were all household names in their day, all were successful pastors, missionaries, or academics. All fruitful preaching to believers must take this as its starting-point: "Ye are in Christ Jesus." (Andrew Murray, 1884) "What is it to be in Christ? It is to be represented by Christ, to have Him stand for us, and enter into all the benefits and privileges of His standing" (Albert B. Simpson, 1888). "The fact is that when we speak of being 'in Christ' we are consciously or unconsciously making a confession of faith; we are framing a Christology... We are declaring that Jesus is no mere fact in history, no towering personality of the past, but a living, present Spirit, whose nature is the very nature of God" (James Stewart, 1935, on G. Adolf Deissmann, 1892). "Those three short words, in Christ Jesus, are, without doubt, the most important ever written, even by an inspired pen, to express the mutual relation of the believer and Christ. Sometimes we meet the expression, in Christ or in Christ Jesus, and again in Him, or in whom, etc." (Arthur T. Pierson, 1898). "The need is some concept that would reduce the whole of life to the utmost simplicity. If you have that, you're "in"; if you don't have it, you're "out." I felt I had found that concept in the phrase "in Christ." If you are "in Christ" you're "in life"; if you are "out of Christ" you're "out of life" (E. Stanley Jones, 1961). Who were these men? · Stephen Tyng (1800-1885) was rector (minister) of St. George's Episcopal Church, New York, and through his book Christ Is All a significant influence on the life of Hudson Taylor, missionary to China. · A.J. Gordon (1836-1895) came to prominence in the United States as the forthright evangelical pastor of Clarendon Street Baptist Church in Boston for over 25 years. · Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was born in South Africa into the family of a Scottish pastor of a Dutch church. He became a much-loved pastor, a prolific author of some 200 books, and an international evangelist and teacher. · A. B. Simpson (1843-1919) was a preacher, evangelist and writer, who founded the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination of churches and was a frequent speaker at D.L. Moody's Northfield Conferences. · Gustav Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937) was a prominent German theologian and scholar, and professor of Theology at the University of Berlin. · Arthur T. Pierson (1837-1911) was an outstanding American preacher, well-known Bible scholar, and author of over 50 books, who had the honor of serving as interim pastor for Charles Spurgeon in London, England. · E. Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was an American Methodist missionary to India for over half a century, and author of 28 books, most of which were bestsellers. He had a major Christian influence worldwide, which lives on in his Christian Ashram movement. Note: None of these quotations have been dumbed down for today's audience. All are in the writer's own eloquent words that reflect the period when they were written. 1.
